Psalm 14

Psalm 14

Now is the time to follow God!

When we see our reality, there is no hope. When we perceive the reality behind our reality, however, there is hope.  What we see is despair but what is behind the world is God’s love.  Fools see only the surface. That is why, as the psalmist mimics: Fools say in their hearts, “There is no God.”

Actually they do not want to see God more than they cannot see God. They know that once they face God they have to change their life styles. They do not want that.

“They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is no one who does good.”

However, the psalmist declares that it is not only “they” but “we” have the same issue. Even we, who believe in God, do not seek God and seek only the superficial success and fame.

“The Lord looks down from heaven on humankind to see if there are any who are wise, who seek after God. They have all gone astray, they are all alike perverse; there is no one who does good, no, not one.”

This is an uncomfortable truth. Evildoers are evil but believer are ignorant. Both do not call upon God. We all do what we want and do not ask God’s will:

“Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers who eat up my people as they eat bread, and do not call upon the Lord?”

However, here is one big difference. When God shows God’s power and justice, the righteous are willing to follow God’s will! Evildoers, however, they would not listen to God and willingly take the path to death.

“There they shall be in great terror, for God is with the company of the righteous. You would confound the plans of the poor, but the Lord is their refuge. O that deliverance for Israel would come from Zion!    When the Lord restores the fortunes of his people, Jacob will rejoice; Israel will be glad.”

When we see God’s love, our hearts are warmed. When we experience God’s power, our eyes are opened. God-fearers are the ones who follow God there and then. Evildoers flatly deny God’s love and power still.
