Psalm 39

Psalm 39

What is the greatest sin that a person can commit? The Bible says that it is a sin of a mouth! We think of murder, rape, robbery, kidnapping, and theft are big sins but the Bible says lie, curse, criticism, blaming, all the sins that we commit with our mouth are great sins. They are expressions of our hearts actually.

When we are full of appreciation, our words are blessings, praises, and thanksgiving. The Bible cares more about the condition of our hearts than actual actions. That is why the psalmist tries to guard her tongue first: “I said, ‘I will guard my ways that I may not sin with my tongue; I will keep a muzzle on my mouth as long as the wicked are in my presence.’ I was silent and still; I held my peace to no avail; my distress grew worse, my heart became hot within me. While I mused, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue: ‘Lord, let me know my end, and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is. You have made my days a few handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing in your sight. Surely everyone stands as a mere breath. Surely everyone goes about like a shadow. Surely for nothing they are in turmoil; they heap up, and do not know who will gather.”

When we realize that our lives are short, we do not want to waste our lives in hating others. We have simply no time for that. We need to spend all of our time in building up others and realizing all our potentials that God has given to us. We simply do not deal with our enemies. They have their own fates. We need to focus on what we need to do in God: “And now, O Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in you. Deliver me from all my transgressions. Do not make me the scorn of the fool. I am silent; I do not open my mouth, for it is you who have done it. Remove your stroke from me; I am worn down by the blows of your hand.”

Whatever happens, it happens because of the relationship that I have with God. Mortal people have no control over things that happen to me. They simply have do power over things that happen to me. So, I do not hate anybody. I do not blame those who have no power over the things that happen to me. If something happen, it happens because of God: “You chastise mortals in punishment for sin, consuming like a moth what is dear to them; surely everyone is a mere breath.”

To be against God is like punching a rock with my bare fist. It just hurts me and does not make any dent to God.  So I pray to God, knowing and acknowledging that I am just a passing shadow: “Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear to my cry; do not hold your peace at my tears. For I am your passing guest, an alien, like all my forebears. Turn your gaze away from me, that I may smile again, before I depart and am no more.”

I do not have enemies. I do not blame others. I just want to be closer to God
