Psalm 43

Psalm 43

Prayer to God in Time of Trouble

The psalmist goes through lot of troubles. Many psalms are prayers in the times of trouble as the title of this psalm shows. The common theme in these psalms is that the solution is not outside but inside of the psalmist. She does not try to fix the mind of others or the world. She tries to find peace in herself by finding God in her. So, she keeps coming to God in times of trouble: “Vindicate me, O God, and defend my cause against an ungodly people; from those who are deceitful and unjust deliver me! For you are the God in whom I take refuge; why have you cast me off? Why must I walk about mournfully because of the oppression of the enemy? O send out your light and your truth; let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling. Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy; and I will praise you with the harp, O God, my God.”

In the first part, she prays to God. However, in the second part of the psalm, she talks to her soul as she is the third party: “Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my help and my God.”

Sometimes, our soul needs to be reminded of the loving and powerful God as our Father. When we look around the world, it is full of enemies and hostile people. However, when we calm down and carefully reflect on the moments of life with mindfulness, we can experience the loving Father. Our soul need to relearn about God!
