Psalm 142
Prayer for Deliverance from Persecutors
This psalm has a subtitle, “A Maskil of David. When he was in the cave. A Prayer.” When he was in the cave, he was actually in a good position to kill the king Saul! (1 Samuel 24 & 26). However, David did not kill Saul but prayed to God! This is the real faith in real life!
“With my voice I cry to the Lord; with my voice I make supplication to the Lord. I pour out my complaint before him; I tell my trouble before him. When my spirit is faint, you know my way. In the path where I walk they have hidden a trap for me. Look on my right hand and see—there is no one who takes notice of me; no refuge remains to me; no one cares for me.”
We do not ask help from other humans in real crisis. We ask God’s deliverance!
In our lives, we need to help others and to get help from other fellow human beings. However, in real crisis, there is no one who can help us. When we go through true crisis in life, only God can help. That is what David found out.
“I cry to you, O Lord; I say, ‘You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.’ Give heed to my cry, for I am brought very low. Save me from my persecutors, for they are too strong for me. Bring me out of prison, so that I may give thanks to your name. The righteous will surround me, for you will deal bountifully with me.”
After this psalm, David had to flee to a foreign country and act like an insane person to survive. However, God listened to his prayer and answered him with great happenings in his life and in history. We need to praise God in sufferings and patience to wait God’s grace.
