Psalm 148

Psalm 148

All the creatures praise God in the universe!

Not only humans praise God. Not only animals and plants praise God. To the psalmist, sparkling stars are praising God and blowing wind is also praising God. When the psalmist feels, sees, and hears the chorus of the universe, she exclaims that the whole universe praises God!

“Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the heights! Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his host! Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars! Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens! Let them praise the name of the Lord, for he commanded and they were created.”

In all praises, we can find order.

When we listen to music, it flows. There is a theme and many variations. The preceding part lead the following parts. In this way, music creates an order. We feel beauty because of such order. In this praise of universe also has an order. That is the order that the Creator set in it. The order points to the glory of God.

“He established them forever and ever; he fixed their bounds, which cannot be passed. Praise the Lord from the earth, you sea monsters and all deeps, fire and hail, snow and frost, stormy wind fulfilling his command! Mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars! Wild animals and all cattle, creeping things and flying birds! Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the earth! Young men and women alike, old and young together! Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted; his glory is above earth and heaven.”

It is our privilege to praise the Creator.

The ones who recognize the Creator and praise the One are the people of God. God will lift them up and make them continuously praise the Creator. In this sense, praising God is special grace given to us.

“He has raised up a horn for his people, praise for all his faithful, for the people of Israel who are close to him. Praise the Lord!”
